Barstool Sports Brings Super Bowl to Visual Radio with TriCaster® Mini
February 08, 2018 by Chuck Baker
Barstool Sports produced a whopping 10 hours per day radio show live from Cowboy Jack’s in Minneapolis during Super Bowl LII week. Listeners could follow the unique satirical mix of sports and lifestyle “by the common man, for the common man” live on Barstool’s SiriusXM channel, or enjoy the show as video-on-demand segments produced on quick turnaround by the New York studios and provided on the website.
The production system was the ultra-portable NewTek TriCaster® Mini, multi-camera integrated production system with graphics, media players, virtual sets, 8-channel switching and live streaming. Production took place on a custom-built set inside the iconic local sportsbar. Three Sony XDCAM PXW X70 cameras covered the action. Audio went live to SiriusXM, the video production was streamed to the New York office for on-demand production.
Barstool’s contract with SirusXM means that the “visual radio” version of the show does not stream live, but live is the more typical paradigm for radio shows that have added video production of their programming, for example the popular Kidd Kraddick Morning Show. The immediacy and unpredictability of live programming is far more compelling for audiences, and all the more so when your talent is not just in their ears but in their eyes as well. And streaming now goes anywhere, with mobile devices the top choice for consuming media for today’s generation.
